Desktops and laptops outnumber servers by 10 to 1 within most small business environments. Employee productivity is dependent upon how effective they utilize the resources provided by their desktop environment and the network it provides access to. However many small businesses spend inordinately less time on the issues related to the desktop then to the IT network infrastructure and servers. They historically manage desktop services on a pay as you go and time and materials basis. Consistency from one desktop to the next, at the operating system, middleware, backup, file purging, and security levels, creates an obstacle to clean and efficient support. Each service incident may be unique and costly to resolve.
