When it began about 16 years ago, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) centered around awareness for individuals about how to stay safe while using the internet. It focused on how to create an effective password, how to identify questionable emails, and reminders about keeping antivirus software updated. Over time, as cyberthreats became more and more sophisticated, so too did the goals of NCSAM. The reach and participation of NCSAM has grown to bring cyber-awareness to small and medium businesses, college campuses, and nonprofit organizations.
Cybersecurity Is a Shared Responsibility
Our world is connected like never before. But while these advances in technology allow us to communicate almost instantly, they are also invitations for criminals. Our finances, our privacy, and even our identities are now commodities that can be stolen and sold. We are entering a new era of cybersecurity that is driven by accountability and responsibility, which means anyone receiving financial or personal information has an obligation to protect that information from cyberthreats.
The Themes of NSCAM 2020
“Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.”
Every connected device is vulnerable which is why effective cyber security uses a layered response to keep everything protected.
NCSAM emphasizes “If You Connect It, Protect It.” Throughout October, CISA and NCSA will focus on the following areas in our promotions and outreach:
October 1 and 2: Official NCSAM Kick-off
Week of October 5 (Week 1): If You Connect It, Protect It
Week of October 12 (Week 2): Securing Devices at Home and Work
Week of October 19 (Week 3): Securing Internet-Connected Devices in Healthcare
Week of October 26 (Week 4): The Future of Connected Devices
Cybersecurity Awareness Month goes well beyond how individuals use the internet securely; it represents a great opportunity for businesses to examine how safe their networks are, too.
